Process Checklist

Today, I wanted to start talking about how to set up a process checklist. For every component of your system you should start developing process checklists.

The best place to start this kind of checklist is the development of a daily review checklist. The reason these lists are going to be so important is because for everything you have to do, if you have broken down the complete process onto paper, that’s one less thing you have to think about.

Here is why I recommend that you start developing them in the form of an example. Yesterday, I had a business presentation scheduled. Before the meeting, I had some down time to think about what I was going to say and it occurred to me that I should have also scheduled a one on one meeting with my potential client. It’s these moments that happen to you during the day that should tell you that you should be in constant development of a process checklist for each and every activity you perform on a daily basis.

Why? So, you don’t forget anything and can get all of your processes out of your head.

The real benefit of clarifying the exact steps you need to take regarding the accomplishment of a task is that it also forces you to figure out what done looks like. It also tells you when your work is finished.

I started these lists of my processes small, with parts of my day broken down by type of activity I needed to complete, but here is where I suggest you start.

Make two checklists. One for the morning and one for the evening.

When you start making these lists, ask yourself, if I had the perfect day what would it look like. Then add these things to your list.

Your daily process checklist might look like this:

Get up
Shower
Eat breakfast
Open email
Process email inbox
Delete spam
Check on waiting for

And so on.

At first, your daily checklist will be rough sketches of how your day should go or the roadmap for how to get something done. Before you know it, you’ll have a complete checklist of everything you need to do and each step you need to take.

Once you have your process checklist for each day complete, then the next step is to time yourself and see how fast you can get through processing your checklist when you sit down to work on it. Good luck and get started!
